Introduction

AUTO-UNION

I have created this website to show interested people the process of manufacturing a car from start to finish. I hope that it will give a snapshot of the skill and dedication required.

I will take commissions for similar style cars. This is not a quick process and you can expect the scaling, design, manufacture and comissioning to take 3,000 hours for a complicated car, such as the Auto Union.

A little bit about me

My name is John and I have 24 years experience in restoring cars and engineering projects. I have a BSc Hons degree in Product Design for manufacture, as well as being apprentice trained in a mechanical workshop.

Early in 2010 I was thinking about what my next home engineering project would be. Having always loved german cars I thought about making a model of an early german GP car, finally deciding on the Auto Union type A because in my eyes it is the purest shape that Auto Union ever made, the upright grill and the slender body of the type A make it so beautiful.

So having decided on the type A, I went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed and also to visit the car collection of a family who own the only type A in the world. I was kindly allowed to take detailed scale photographs of the cars, with which I have based my engineering drawings.

The next step was to decide on the scale. I thought about building a large scale non driving model but that would be as much work as a more useful driving scale model that my boys can drive. I chose a scale of 2/3rds which should suit a child up to 10 years old, or an adult of around 5 feet tall.
